A Famed Stunt Actress Shares Her Recovery Journey After On-Set Horror
Advocacy After experiencing a terrible accident on the set of a popular movie franchise, Olivia Jackson remains optimistic and motivates others to do the same.
The first day on set for “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” started out like any other typical day for famed stunt actress Olivia Jackson. She was dressed like Milla Jovovich, the star of the film, and preparing to perform a spectacular motorcycle stunt similar to other feats she'd completed countless times before.
[Jackson] began sessions with an osteopath, whom she credits with giving her back the "life" in her life.
Unfortunately, this time, the unthinkable happened: a camera arm, which was supposed to swing above her head, crashed into her as she passed by at a blistering speed. This accident caused extensive injuries ― including a severed neck artery, facial degloving, head trauma, a punctured lung and irreparable left arm damage. She was put into a medically induced coma for 17 days, underwent numerous surgeries and lost her arm to amputation.
But the story doesn't end there. Today, Olivia Jackson refuses to let being an amputee define her life. Through much hard work, courage and unending support from loved ones, she has made astounding strides in her recovery ― and advocates for others facing similar circumstances to follow in her footsteps.
The path to wellness
Despite suffering from what she describes as "a 10-out-of-10 pain level physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually," Jackson pushed through the agony and followed her recovery plan thoroughly. When she returned to the United Kingdom six months after her accident, she began sessions with an osteopath, whom she credits with giving her back the "life" in her life.
Through pure grit, courage and determination, she worked with him six days per week to regain strength and mobility. She now only has to see him approximately once weekly.
Jackson and her husband also turned one room in their house into a physio gym, where she practices her exercises three hours each day. She utilizes Buddhist meditation and reads philosophy to keep her mind strong.
While she may never be the type of athlete who performs professional stunts again, Olivia Jackson remains fulfilled. In particular, she enjoys encouraging others not to let any disability stop them from enjoying life. She says, "I find it very beautiful how strangers from across the world will send me messages of support and care. I've also found it rewarding to help kids that have some sort of disability."
