Leading by Example: Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Commitment to Green Living
Advocacy Award winning actress and producer Julia Louis-Dreyfus drives an electric car, frequents farmers’ markets and uses solar power at her home.
Fans know her as Elaine Benes from “Seinfeld” and Selina Meyer, the vice president on “VEEP,” but Emmy and Golden Globe award winning actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus wants you to know about her passion to protect the environment.
“My actions have an impact on humanity and generations to come,” says the 53-year-old actress, producer and environmentalist who makes the Earth a priority and encourages others to do so too, without being pushy.
“I don’t really lecture, I just do,” says Louis-Dreyfus, explaining she became more environmentally conscious after she had children.
“All of these seemingly small choices and decisions can have great impact.”
The actress, her husband and two sons have many green habits. When building their family home a few years ago, they incorporated sustainability by installing a grey water system to recycle water; using reclaimed wood and powering the home with solar energy.
Louis-Dreyfus’ other green habits include driving an electric car, buying clean, organic and unprocessed foods and shopping two times a week at her local farmers’ market.
Making smarter choices
Global warming is a big concern for Louis-Dreyfus, who admits going green can be difficult or overwhelming, especially at first. But little changes can have big impact.
The actress references this quote from Anita Roddick, founder of Body Shop, “If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito.”
Getting started with green living means doing things that are good for the environment such as recycling, “or being aware of how you spend you money on light bulbs, paper, and the food you buy and the food you put in your body,” Louis-Dreyfus says. “All of these seemingly small choices and decisions can have great impact.”
She advocates getting involved on the local level, finding out what the environmental concerns are and then working to make positive changes to fix the problems.
