Most homeowners think of their garage door as a convenience, or maybe part of their curb appeal. However, wind science researchers think of it as one of your home’s most important structural defenses. That’s because during a tornado, hurricane, or other high-wind event, your garage door may determine whether your roof stays on your home — or not.
When a garage door fails, powerful winds rush into the garage and create pressure inside the opening, like blowing up a balloon. That pressure pushes upward on the roof and outward on the walls, dramatically increasing the chance of major structural damage.
Today, manufacturers, dealers, and insurance companies are also coming to understand this underrated source of home protection in hurricanes, tornadoes, and even summer thunderstorms.
What the research shows
When National Institute of Standards and Technology researchers analyzed thousands of homes damaged by severe storms, they found that when garage doors remained intact, about 90% of homes avoided structural roof and wall damage. This finding holds even in wind speeds up to 135 mph, levels equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane and one mile per hour shy of an EF3 tornado.
Another study found that approximately 60% of homes with damaged garage doors also suffered roof structural damage, compared with less than 10% when the garage door stayed in place.
Those are remarkable numbers for one home improvement.

Tornadoes occur across more than 75% of the United States, and damaging straight-line winds, derechos, and severe thunderstorms can strike almost anywhere. That’s why wind-rated garage doors aren’t just a coastal issue; they’re a resilience upgrade for homes across much of the country.
A recent national survey by the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) found that nearly 7 in 10 Americans were unaware that a failed garage door can lead to major roof and wall damage during severe wind events.
Once homeowners learn the connection, many say they’re willing to invest in stronger protection.
The upgrade costs less than expected
For many newly constructed homes, upgrading from a standard garage door to a wind-rated model may add only about $225, according to industry experts. Even when replacing an existing garage door, the additional investment is modest compared with the cost of repairing major roof or structural damage after a storm.
In some areas, homeowners may also qualify for insurance discounts or incentives because insurers now recognize the critical role these doors play.
